Our Silk

The prestige of golden silk Ikat, combined with brocade woven bands that appear along the borders and end pieces of a shawl or a sampot is a process that is highly skilled and very time consuming.

Golden Silk’s brocades and Ikats, the jewels of our creation, are not only vehicles for the memory of Cambodia, as the precious silk garments they adorn are one of the key elements of Cambodian history, but they also represent the spearhead of what could be called the “Silk Civilisation”.

The weaving of Ikat is already so complex and needs a lot of precision that adding to be hand woven with brocade, the result can only be magically divine.

Brocade

This most luxurious garment was mostly worn by powerful and wealthy people in the past with extremely intricate designs for the Khmer kings and queens. Brocade emits a distintive aura of beauty & sophistication.

Inspired by the carving of the Angkor Temples, Golden Silk team gave the best of themselves (without any transmition) to research, to accomplish this craft which took on a character of challenge.

IKAT

Ikat is characterized by those patterns that have no clearly marked borders. It is dyed before the final pattern is woven. It is a fabric that is thought & conceived as it is out of time. Just the preparation work for the thread not the weaving, but the knotting, dying, the threading can take 1 to 2 years & the weaver takes her time to place them on the loom.

She slowly reflects on & anticipates what she wants to do, like a gestation period.

Ikat is a memory of the world, of humankind.
